Gomoku Narabe Renju  Nintendo1983Gomoku Narabe Renju is a Japan-exclusive video game for the Family Computer (in addition to the Virtual Console) which is based on the board game Connect Five. There are three difficulty levels in addition to a two-player mode - beginner, intermediate, and advanced. Unlike tic-tac-toe where there is usually a draw if both players pay attention, there is always a possibility to win in Gomoku Narabe. Since 1936, studies have proven that players controlling the "black" tiles can win by playing a completely perfect game. Some rules were introduced to keep the game fair and to reduce black's advantage on the board. The game follows the Renju rules. For example, the player controlling the black tiles only wins with five pieces in a row. Rows of six or more are called overlines and will result in a loss instead. White tile-controlling players, on the other hand, has no such restrictions and can win by collecting a row of five or more tiles.
(Source: Wikipedia)******"Gomoku Narabe Renju" is the first board game for the Famicom. It features three difficulty levels, from beginner to advanced. A two-player mode allows you to also play against a friend. It is a very basic interpretation of a Go(moku) game. Not suprisingly the graphics are pretty underwhelming and the game lacks motivating features. Only for die-hard Gomoku or board game fans.

Daiva Story 6: Imperial of Nirsartia  Toshiba EMI (T&E Soft)1986ナーサティアの玉座 actually reads
nāsatia no gyokuza
(Throne of Nirsartia).***"Daiva: Imperial of Nirsartia" combines strategy gameplay with shoot'em up scenes. You start from your home planet with a fleet to other planets to conquer/free them. In space it is possible that you meet an enemy fleet and the screen switches to an overhead map where you can move you ships on a square grid. Beating the enemy fleet can provide you with information about secrets like the location of otherwise hidden planets (like the very last planet named "Nirsartia"). When you land on a planet the game becomes a side-scrolling shoot'em up where you shoot your way from left to right. Killing the boss at the end means you conquer the planet. You should fly back to your home planet from time to time to upgrade your fleet with more ships and save your game. The graphics and music are ok, the shoot'em up sequences are playable but all planets feel very similar, despite different graphics. And the strategy part can become tedious with bigger fleets. I give T&E Soft my respect for trying something new on the Famicom. In 1986 there existed no strategy games for consoles. But in the end both parts of the game are not fully satisfying. labelimageminimize
Nobunaga no Yabō: Zenkokuban  Koei1988NOBUNAGA'S AMBITION is a turn-based strategy game set in Japan's "Warring States" period that is the 16th century when Japan was divided into numerous feudal states, each one ruled by a daimyo - a warlord. One of those daimyos was the ambitious Nobunaga Oda, a merciless ruler and a great strategist. Now you are Nobunaga and you have to bring your one wish true that is to rule the whole of Japan.***"Nobunaga's Ambition" is the first Koei strategy game appearing on consoles and a port of the second game in the Nobunaga series from Japanese computer systems. Your task is to conquer all "fiefs" in Japan, either in a shorter 17 fiefs game or a longer 50 fiefs game. The game surely set a new standard for NES strategy games regarding complexity. It not only features a strategic level of governing your fief, but also tactical warfare when attacking or defending a fief on a hex-map. My biggest issue with this game is the difficulty level, which is rather high and the fact that the game is rather slow paced. Especially the 50 fief game takes ages to play.***1 player, 2 players, 3 players, 4 players, 5 players, 6 players, 7 players, or 8 players competitive turn based play. King of Kings  Namco (Atlus)1988Not related to [game=#7923]Wisdom Tree's King of Kings[/game]

One player, two player, three player, or four players take turns in concurrent/competing/cooperative play. (the game is designed for both competitive and cooperative strategies)
One to four players receive funds for each city they occupy. With these funds they can build different troop types including humans or fantastic creatures. Each troop type moves better or worse in different terrains. Differing movement abilities and the way the different kinds of troops interact with each other, having different strengths and weaknesses depending on which type that are battling with, means strategy is emphasized over sheer numbers or experience of each unit (but the latter two are still advantageous).

Human Units: King (only one per player), Fighter, Knight>Silver Knight>Dragon Knight, Monk>Priest>Bishop, Sorcerer>Mage>Wizard.
Fairy Units: Goblin, Harpy, Elf, Giant, Gryphon
Dragon Units: Lizardman, Wyvern, Serpent, Dragon
Other Units: Golem, Skeleton
Non-playables: Cockatrice, Sword Fighter, Axe Fighter, Lance Fighter, Bow Fighter, Cerberus, Gargoyle, Barbarian, Zombie

Aoki Ookami to Shiroki Mejika: Genghis Khan  Koei1989Become Genghis Khan and lead the most fearsome army in the known world. Use your Land of Mongols to build an empire on the bodies of your enemies and the rubble of their conquered cities. With skill, cunning, diplomacy and luck, all of Europe and Asia could be yours. Failure means shame in the eyes of your princess, or even death! Victory on the battlefield requires bold strategy and clever planning. Outmaneuver your opponent with cavalry, lay siege to his castle with archers or even challenge him to a duel. But success also requires brilliant political tactics and a sharp eye for business during times of peace. Genghis Khan is based on actual history and offers a blend of strategy and role playing elements. Make history as you play the great Khan himself or his rivals, Richard the Lionhearted, Emperor Alexious III, or Shogun Minamoto of Japan. labelimagesubject
Defender of the Crown Ultra Games;Palcom Software (Beam Software)1989The in-game story seems to refer to the end of the second crusade and one of the few battles that the crusading forces actually won. Undoubtedly this is backstory and the game is set some time later than 1149 and sooner than 1199 (which is the historical beginning of John of England's reign). Probably the murdered king mentioned is Henry II of England, who actually died of natural causes in 1189; but his health was certainly not improved by the actions of his sons, especial Prince John. Never the less, the in-game date begins counting from October 1149. The game takes much dramatic license. The player is one of the six knights mentioned in the story and all of these knights will be battling for England.

Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryū to Hikari no Ken  Nintendo (Intelligent Systems)1990Fire Emblem: Ankoku Ryū to Hikari no Ken is a tactical role-playing game where players take on the role of Marth and his growing army during their campaign across the continent of Archanea. The game progresses in a linear fashion, with maps being unlocked and played as dictated by the storyline. Each playable character is assigned a unique character classes that have various functions in battle, such as being mounted or having access to magic. A unit's class affects their range of movement and strength on the battlefield; mounted or flying units have greater mobility, archers have a greater attack range, while heavily armored characters have more damage resistance. Each character has a set character class, and each time a unit raises its experience level, its various stats increase randomly. There are a total of 25 characters that can be recruited over the course of the game, and 21 available classes for the majority of characters, with the exception of main protagonist Marth.

Battles use a turn-based battle system, with a limited number of player units and enemy units each taking turns and moving across a grid-based battlefield: battles are won by the player defeating key enemy units such as commanders and other boss characters. In battle, the game transitions to a dedicated battle arena, where the battle plays out in real-time. Each action yields experience points (EXP), and when the character earns 100 EXP, they level up, their health increases, and their class-specified statistics are randomly raised. During missions, towns and secret vendors can be visited, where new items such as healing potions, weapons and armor can be purchased. Weapons and armor are specific to different characters, and each weapon has a limited lifespan before breaking when it reaches its limit. Currency is limited to certain scripted or player-driven events, or wagering on arena battles. If a character falls in battle, they are subjected to permanent death, removing them from subsequent missions and the rest of the storyline. The game ends if Marth falls in battle.
[Source: Wikipedia]***First episode of the Fire Emblem series, and often considered as the very first tactical role-playing game, Fire Emblem uses gameplay mechanics that are still used in most T-RPG.

The premise of this game is that it was invented by the ancient Egyptians. Its a Tetris like game that includes shapes with bricks cut in half diagonally. This makes it extremely difficult to build a row. It could have been better titled "Curse of the Bricks". The description of the game on the back of the box is uniquely laid out in the shape of a triangle. Despite the official description, pieces function like the original Tetris bricks and cannot be "twisted" into place.

While there is proof that AVE published this game in the USA, its possible Thin Chen Enterprise did so also. There are 72-pin NES carts in NTSC format of this game marked Sachen, but no proof they were sold in the USA. Thin Chen Enterprise did however, file a US patent for the game, which makes a US release much more likely. Also, Thin Chen Enterprise Company, Ltd (Sachen) registered a US copyright (TX-3-038-106) 1990-06-16 for "Pyramid I" and recorded that the work was published on 1990-07-10 (the Japanese publishing date)

The Hacker International version includes nudity but is not immediately distinguishable from the other famicom versions. Usually they have a blue & gold label.

Latest known prototype dated 1991-8-22***Game description from KingMike's Translations:

This is an interesting puzzle game in the vein of Puyo Puyo and Columns. You can choose from various forms of sealife to pile up. Get four in a row and they disappear. The typical puzzle game deal. Though here, you must have two or more pieces connected, with the end pieces both the same color, but different than the middle two. This seems to be a small change, but it actually makes a pretty big challenge difference. You'll have to really break yourself of the Columns habit of stacking same colored pieces around the edge. Because, you'll quickly realize your screwed. Pretty interesting if you're a big puzzle game fan. Might be frustrating if you're not. Well, anyways, the unusual thing is that game this never actually came out. But thanks to the generosity of a website devoted to unreleased video games (since they give us games in ROM form (though the background infromation articles are grate), I'm not permitted to say who), we can play this game. The only thing really to translate was the rules that pop up after waiting at the title. Though as you may have gathered, this game was never actually finished. Take that in mind if the game randomly crashes or resets. I noticed random crashes, especially after some long chains and combinations. Maybe the game's mad your kicking ITS arse. :D

JustBreed  Enix (Random House;Enix)1992Game description from [[link:http://stealth.romhack.net/ Stealth Translations]]:

Just Breed is a strategy-RPG for the Famicom that was released by Enix on December 15, 1992, making it one of the last RPG-ish games ever released for the Famicom, or so I've been told. It had some pretty advanced features for the time, such as B-button dash, extra sound channels, and a large font (the Japanese script even has a smattering of kanji, generally unheard of on the Famicom). Also, the characters were designed by Yuzo Takada, author of the manga 3x3 Eyes, though it's not like you'd be able to tell from the 16x16 character sprites. The game plays much like Fire Emblem or Shining Force, with the gimmick here (called the 'Team Spirits' system) being that your units are grouped into armies and must take all their actions together as one army, as well as stay close to their respective commanding officers. Between battles you get to explore a rather large number of towns, which provide entertaining and occasionally odd story events as well as a welcome respite from the monotony of that blasted overworld music.
